Description
This minifigure represents a Soviet Red-Army marksman, one of the sharpshooters who played a vital role in the brutal battles of the Eastern Front during World War II. While the Red Army fielded millions of ordinary infantry, select soldiers with exceptional shooting skills were equipped and trained as marksmen or snipers, providing a deadly edge against German forces.
The primary weapon of the Soviet marksman was the Mosin–Nagant Model 1891/30 rifle, often fitted with a PU telescopic sight. Reliable, accurate, and rugged, this rifle became the hallmark of Soviet sniping. Some marksmen also used the semi-automatic SVT-40 rifle, which allowed for quicker follow-up shots but was less common in the field.
The Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43) brought Soviet snipers to global attention. Figures such as Vasily Zaytsev, credited with over 200 kills, became legendary symbols of Soviet resistance. Snipers were tasked with hunting enemy officers, machine gunners, and artillery spotters, undermining German morale and command. In the ruined cityscapes, marksmen set ambushes from rubble, upper floors, and concealed firing points, creating a constant sense of danger for German troops.
This minifigure reflects the Soviet marksman’s appearance: the khaki gymnastiorka tunic, ammunition pouches, belt gear, and the steel SSh-40 helmet or pilotka cap. Many also wore camouflage smocks or used improvised cover in the field. Alongside their rifles, they carried sidearms or grenades for defence if discovered.
Beyond Stalingrad, Soviet marksmen fought in every major campaign — Kursk (1943), the liberation of Eastern Europe, and the final assault on Berlin (1945). Their skill magnified Soviet combat power, and many were decorated as Heroes of the Soviet Union.
This minifigure pays tribute to the Soviet sharpshooters — patient, deadly, and crucial in turning the tide of the war on the Eastern Front.
