In the 19th century the British army went through exceptional changes to to ensure they could fight in a variety of wars all across the world. Line Infantry, the back-bone of Red Coat army had a harsh life; with strict discipline terrifying battlegrounds and punishment for even minor disobedience. This is one of many reasons why the British became hugely influential and powerful in Europe during the course of the century.
To maintain the high levels of discipline needed to keep the troops in line, NCO’s or non-commissioned officers were employed. Often with the more experienced soldiers, who could read and write and show skills in command and drill were selected. They could be either sergeants or corporals and would be expected to lead platoons and squads respectively.
