Tommy Atkins or Thomas Atkins has been used as a generic name for a common British soldier for many years. French and German troops in the first world war would often refer to British troops as ‘Tommies’. So much so that Germans would shout across the trenches if they wished to speak with British between ‘No man’s land’.

WW2 British Army Tommy soldiers would typically be equipped with Mk 1 helmets, Lee Enfield magazine fed, bolt-action rifles and battle dress.
