Description

This minifigure depicts a Soviet Red-Army Submachine gunner of World War II, a role that became increasingly prominent as the conflict wore on. Unlike the standard rifleman armed with the Mosin–Nagant, the submachine gunner was a close-quarters specialist, often placed in shock assault groups tasked with storming buildings, trenches, and bunkers.

The weapon that defined this role was the PPSh-41 submachine gun, one of the most mass-produced firearms in history. With over 6 million made, it was a symbol of Soviet firepower. Nicknamed the “burp gun” by German soldiers, it had a high rate of fire and was fed by a 71-round drum magazine, making it devastating in urban combat. Soviet infantrymen armed with PPShs were especially feared in the Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43), where brutal close-quarters fighting raged in factories, streets, and even sewers.

This minifigure’s design highlights the Soviet infantryman’s simple yet effective kit: khaki tunic, ammunition pouches, belt gear, and the steel SSh-40 helmet. Many submachine gunners carried additional drum or box magazines, grenades, and sometimes knives for close-in fighting. Their uniforms were often rough and practical, reflecting the Soviet emphasis on quantity and functionality over elegance.

Submachine gunners also featured prominently in the Battle of Kursk (1943), the largest tank battle in history, where they supported armoured formations in defending against German assaults. Later, during the Soviet push westward, submachine gunners were at the forefront of offensives into Poland, Hungary, and finally Berlin in 1945. Their firepower, combined with mass infantry tactics, overwhelmed German defences in relentless assaults.

This minifigure commemorates the Red Army’s storm troops — lightly equipped but heavily armed, embodying Soviet resilience and aggressive tactics that turned the tide of the war.
