Description
This minifigure depicts a soldier of the Red Army, the immense force of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. By 1941, when Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the Soviet Union fielded the largest army in the world, numbering millions. However, the initial German invasion caught the Soviets off guard, leading to catastrophic losses of men and equipment. Despite this, the Soviet infantryman would ultimately become one of the decisive factors in the defeat of Nazi Germany.
The typical Red Army infantryman was equipped with simple yet effective gear. Most carried the Mosin–Nagant rifle, a bolt-action weapon first introduced in the 1890s, still reliable despite its age. Others used the PPSh-41 submachine gun, famous for its high rate of fire and large drum magazine, giving Soviet troops devastating close-range capability. Soldiers often wore the pilotka side cap or the steel SSh-40 helmet, along with the standard khaki-brown gymnastiorka tunic and puttees or boots.
Soviet infantry endured some of the harshest conditions of the war. During the Siege of Leningrad, they fought and starved for 900 days under constant German bombardment. At Stalingrad (1942–1943), infantrymen fought house to house, cellar to cellar, in what became one of the most brutal urban battles in history. Soviet doctrine emphasized massed infantry assaults, often at terrible human cost, but their resilience gradually bled German forces dry.
By the war’s end in 1945, the Red Army had marched from the ruins of their cities all the way to Berlin, raising the Soviet flag over the Reichstag as a symbol of ultimate victory.
This minifigure captures the rugged determination of the Soviet soldier. With his distinct uniform and weaponry, he represents the ordinary men and women who bore the brunt of the Eastern Front, suffering immense sacrifices but securing one of the most pivotal victories in modern history.
