Description
The German Stielhandgranate (“stick grenade”), often referred to by Allied forces as the “potato masher,” was a defining weapon of both World Wars. Introduced in 1915 and refined into the Model 24 used throughout World War II, it featured a cylindrical explosive head mounted on a long wooden handle. This design allowed soldiers to throw it farther than conventional grenades, giving German infantry a tactical advantage in open combat. Unlike fragmentation grenades, the Stielhandgranate was primarily a concussion grenade, relying on blast effect rather than shrapnel. Variants were even bundled together (Geballte Ladung) for use against armoured vehicles and bunkers.
