Description
This minifigure represents a German infantryman of the Second World War, the standard soldier of the Wehrmacht and the most common face of the German military machine. Numbering in the millions, German infantry carried out the majority of combat operations, from lightning invasions in the early war to desperate defensive battles in the later years.
The typical infantryman’s weapon was the Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle, a descendant of the Mauser line, known for its rugged reliability and accuracy. Squad tactics often revolved around supporting the MG34 or MG42 machine guns, which provided overwhelming firepower. The MG42, in particular, became infamous for its extremely high rate of fire — up to 1,200 rounds per minute — earning it the nickname “Hitler’s buzzsaw.” Soldiers carried stick grenades, bayonets, and occasionally captured or upgraded weapons as the war dragged on.
Uniforms consisted of the iconic feldgrau (field grey) tunic and trousers, paired with jackboots in the early war and ankle boots with gaiters later on. The M35 steel helmet with its distinctive flared shape offered vital protection and has since become one of the most recognizable symbols of the Wehrmacht. Webbing gear included ammunition pouches, water bottles, a bread bag, gas mask canister, and entrenching tool.
German infantry fought in nearly every theatre of the war. They stormed into Poland in 1939, advanced through France in 1940, slogged through the deserts of North Africa, and marched deep into the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. Later, they defended against the Allied landings in Normandy (1944) and fought in the Battle of the Bulge (1944–45). Despite their training and efficiency, many endured gruelling conditions, shortages, and ultimately retreat as Germany’s war fortunes collapsed.
This minifigure pays tribute to the ordinary German soldier of World War II — disciplined, battle-hardened, and central to the Wehrmacht’s campaigns.
