Description
The Colt Mars PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) is a fascinating yet little-known firearm developed in the 1990s as part of the search for compact, high-performance weapons for vehicle crews. Special forces and law enforcement also used them. Designed by Colt in limited prototypes, it aimed to combine the firepower of a rifle with the portability of a submachine gun.
Chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, the Mars PDW packed rifle-level performance into a small package. It featured a shortened barrel and a collapsible stock, making it highly maneuverable in confined spaces such as armored vehicles or aircraft. Despite its potential, the Mars never entered mass production, as competing PDW designs like the FN P90 and HK MP7 captured more attention in the emerging market.
Technically, the Mars drew heavily from the M16/AR-15 platform, ensuring familiarity for operators while drastically reducing size and weight. It had a cyclic rate of approximately 750 rounds per minute and could be fitted with optical sights or suppressors depending on mission requirements.
For collectors, the Colt Mars PDW accessory represents one of the rare “what-if” firearms of the 1990s — an ambitious attempt to redefine small arms that ultimately remained a prototype. In a minifigure collection, it adds uniqueness and a sense of alternate history, making it a standout piece for enthusiasts who appreciate experimental weaponry.
