Description
This minifigure represents a machine gunner of the German Afrika Korps (Deutsches Afrikakorps, DAK), the expeditionary force commanded by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in North Africa from 1941 to 1943. Renowned for their discipline and effectiveness, Afrika Korps troops fought British, Commonwealth, and later American forces in the deserts of Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia.
Machine gunners were the backbone of German squad tactics. Armed with the MG34 or later the fearsome MG42, they provided devastating sustained firepower that dominated the battlefield. The MG42, in particular, earned the nickname “Hitler’s buzzsaw” for its unmatched rate of fire — up to 1,200 rounds per minute. Afrika Korps machine gunners positioned themselves to control open ground, suppress enemy troops, and support tank manoeuvres.
The desert environment required unique uniforms and gear. Soldiers wore tropical sand-coloured tunics and trousers, paired with high leather boots or canvas footwear suited for hot climates. The iconic DAK field cap or tropical pith helmet replaced the standard steel helmet in many cases, though helmets were still worn in combat. Webbing carried ammunition belts, spare barrels for the machine gun, water canteens, and entrenching tools.
Machine gun crews typically worked in teams of two or three: a gunner, an assistant carrying spare parts and barrels, and an ammunition bearer. In the unforgiving North African desert, they endured blistering heat, sandstorms, and supply shortages while facing relentless Allied offensives. Despite these hardships, they fought in pivotal battles such as Tobruk, Gazala, El Alamein, and finally Tunisia, where the Afrika Korps surrendered in May 1943.
This minifigure highlights the distinctive tropical uniform and heavy firepower of the Afrika Korps machine gunner. It pays tribute to the soldiers who fought in one of the most difficult theatres of the war, where survival depended as much on endurance as on combat skill.
