This minifigure represents a French Horison Blue rifleman of the First World War, wearing the distinctive horizon blue uniform that became synonymous with the French army after 1915. At the outbreak of the war in August 1914, French soldiers still wore the traditional uniform of bright red trousers and dark blue tunics, a design rooted in 19th-century military fashion. However, the realities of modern warfare — with machine guns, artillery, and long-range rifles — made such visibility disastrous. After heavy casualties in the opening months, the French military transitioned to the more practical light blue-grey (“horizon blue”) uniform, offering better camouflage on the Western Front.

Armed primarily with the Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the first military rifle to use smokeless powder cartridges, French infantrymen formed the core of France’s war effort. They were supported by the Chauchat light machine gun, though notoriously unreliable, and by bayonets for close combat in trench assaults. Soldiers carried basic equipment — haversacks, water bottles, and entrenching tools — crucial for surviving in the mud and destruction of the trenches.

French riflemen bore the brunt of some of the most devastating battles of the war, including Verdun (1916), where they endured months of relentless German assaults, and the Somme (1916), fought alongside British allies in one of the bloodiest offensives in history. Their stoicism gave rise to the enduring French military motto: “On ne passe pas” (“They shall not pass”).

The Adrian helmet, introduced in 1915, became another hallmark of the French soldier. Light, steel, and crested, it offered protection against shrapnel and was later adopted by several other nations.
